anesh Chaturthi, the holy ganesh festival, also known as ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’ or ‘Vinayaka Chavithi’ is celebrated by Hindus around the world as the birthday of God Ganesha the son of Shiva and Parvati.

  • The date of Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the fourth day after the new moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
  • This is August or September each year.
  • It’s commonly celebrated for 10-11 days.
  • Ganesh Chaturthi, ends after 10 days on Anant Chaturdashi which is also called as Ganesh Visarjan.
  • Ganesh Utsav is the biggest festival in Maharashtra.
  • Ganesh Chauth is started by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism.
  • After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it.
